Will we need to listen live?  If so, do you know the time difference?

I think that you can listen live but the sessions are probably archived.

From the WOXY website :

Are you ready? South By Southwest is upon us again and WOXY is headed back to Austin to bring you another weeklong series of broadcasts and live sessions from EAR Studios March 16-21.

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

SXSW preview/interview : http://strangeglue.com/interviews/sxsw- … -/10003786

Steve Lamacq first introduced us to young indie punk band Pete and the Pirates back in June '07 when he gave them some air time on his show In New Music We Trust.

Shortly afterwards they released their 13 track debut on Stolen Recordings. The young folks have been touring with the likes of Maximo Park and Vampire Weekend since November and what better way to finish a tour than SxSW? None. Due to their extensive touring we haven't had a chance to hear much new material since their debut, but the guys recently released two new songs 'Blood Gets Thin' and 'Jennifer' for any indie-rockers interested.

If you like what you hear on CD or the interview then be sure to check out the members solo projects, Tap Tap are equally stunning. Evidently they like to keep themselves busy.
1) How many times have you been to SxSW?

This will be the 2nd
2) What's the best thing about being in Austin? or if you've not been before.... What are your tourism related plans?

There is a place which sells Mexican breakfasts, that was very popular when we last went, I guess because the food is very very good. I heard about there being a mass of bats that fly over the river in the evening, which i missed last time, so i will try see them this time.
3) Why are you playing SxSW? (Cos we hear the money isn't too good)

I guess because we were asked to and wanted to go, as we had fun last time we went. Also some of our friends bands are going out, so we didn't want to be the only ones left at home.
4) Who are you showcasing for, and where and when can we expect to see you?

We are doing a Stolen Recordings showcase (they are our record label) which should be great, as all the bands playing are really good, and friends of ours, so it should be a kinda party hopefully. Also we are playing the other music lawn party, a show for music for listeners at a pizza restaurant, a show for New York Noise and quite a few others too.
5) Which other bands/artists are you most looking forward to seeing over music week?

Lets Wrestle, Micachu, Screaming Tea Party, Oh Sees, Artefacts for Space Travel, Ducktails, Jason Lyttle.
6) Will you visit the Film or Interactive sections of SxSW this year? Or is time tight?

I would love to, but I fear we won't have much/any spare time unfortunately.
7) What does the rest of 2009 hold for you?

We are planning to record our 2nd album and release it and play lots of shows, write the third album, and come visit the USA at some point maybe?

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

Blo*dy nora I cant believe I'm missing all the fun. Have some bricks and mortar in Houston, Texas and am over there for 10 days in April for the Shell Houston Open Golf, US Mens Claycourt Champs and shedloads of baseball. Not a little live music either to be fair but Austin's only about 3 hours drive away and I'm finding it tough to accept I'm missing so many Pirates performances by a couple of weeks.....feck! :'(

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

I was able to catch most of their set shortly after 6 pm. It was one of 4 appearances that they did just yesterday alone. The room I saw them in was packed and they sounded absolutely fantastic. I met up with my friends from Notts, Deb and Richard, who are on holiday at SXSW. They've seen the band back at home before. Sorry if I'm  misquoting you Deb but I think that you said something along the lines that it was one of the better shows you've seen from them recently. It was my first time seeing them and I was very pleased :-) I managed to make my way to the front of the stage at the end and introduced myself to Peter C. No time for chat as the band needed to pack up gear and head to another show. The official festival showcase is at 1 am tonight and I will definitely be there :-).

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

Thanks Mike for the doing the research that I've been too busy to do ;-)...lol !

I almost saw their set at the Babelgum party. Gorgeous setting and perfect weather but I needed to meet up with friends at another party. I spotted some of the guys enjoying Alela Diane's set on the lawn. I didn't want to bother anyone so I figured I would wait until the official showcase later that night. It was at a club that I haven't been to before. Lots of venues get used during SXSW that don't regularly feature live music or at least the local bands that I regularly see.  The stage was upstairs in an area that featured a narrow, tight space for folks to stand. Not much room to move around and get by. I guess I looked puzzled enough that littlepete commented that I looked confused. So that's how we met..lol :-). Thanks for the chats before and after the show (littlepete, david, and jonny). Back to the set....for me, it was really nice to hear a longer set after the Hype party the day before. I was also entertained by some of the Brits next to me who were really into it and cheering the band on. I forgot to grab a set list (I blame exhaustion as I had been on my feet for over 12 hours). The set kicked off with Cold Black Kitty -- brilliant ! And ended with Lost in the Woods. And other new and "old" tunes in between :-).

Sorry if it sounds like I'm babbling but as much fun as it is, SXSW is also exhausting and overwhelming. I'm writing this after not much sleep and my feet are a bit sore.

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

Let's see...3 PATP gigs in less than 24 hours - too much of a good thing, perhaps ?  Of course not ! ;-)

Thurs night had the official showcase at 1 am. I headed straight home afterwards and collapsed into bed and saw them twice more yesterday in the mid-afternoon under a carpark tent and in the evening at a lovely outdoor courtyard. I walked in the venue literally a moment before they started with "Jennifer". My friend, Renee, was with me and laughed, "They wrote a song about you !"  Sure, I like that tune but after hearing "Good Girl" twice in a 24 hr span, I can die happy now ;-).

This month, I was one of a few SXSW volunteers interviewed for an article in the Austin American-Statesman. The article appeared in today's edition. And I just happened to mention one of the bands that I said I would be seeing at the festival (ahem...take a guess, folks) : http://www.austin360.com/music/content/ … teers.html

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

I saw my 5th PATP gig on Saturday afternoon at my fave venue in Austin called The Parish. This party was sponsored by Q Magazine. The lineup also included Jay Jay Pistolet (who I missed but I had a good reason as I was coming from a party sponsored by Mojo), Delta Spirit, and Graham Coxon.
A few friends and I arrived after Jay Jay Pistolet had finished so there was time to enjoy some free beers courtesy of the 2 drink tickets given to you at the door. The venue was packed and it felt good to be in the shade again although the venue was a bit warm and stuffy. The gig went off without a hitch. It was the last SXSW gig for the boys (total gig count was 10 or 11, I think). People were dancing, clapping, and singing along. By Saturday of SXSW (SXSW Music starts on Wednesday), you're summoning that last bit of energy and people seemed to find their second wind at The Parish.
Some quick hellos to the guys and I finally met Tommy. I gave him a couple of compilation CDs I put together earlier that morning. The comps are filled with bands mostly from Austin along with a few bands from other places in Texas.
I think that I can say that it was a great week for everyone and there were comments onstage about not wanting to leave Austin. You never know...Austin might have 5 new residents later this year...lol ;-) !
I took lots of photos including a fun group one from The Parish but I'll post those later. I have some UK friends who are in Austin for 2 more days and it'll be nice to have some more relaxed time to hang out with each other.
In the meantime, I think I might already be going through some pirate withdrawal :-).

"You feel low/you get high/you'll end up somewhere in between/you've had a very good weekend/but you can't remember where you've been" could easily sum up SXSW... Just ask the guys lol

Thankyouthankyouthankyou so much for coming to Austin...cheers !!!

Sounding amazing out there Poptartjen, cheers for the match reports. Houston features April2-12 and  I'd be very receptive to any music recommendations, pals or otherwise! Windups very much frowned upon though wink. Will be on the web for the duration

Re: SXSW 2009 (South by Southwest)

At Cedar Street Courtyard, that showcase was sponsored by BlackBerry so there were a bunch of people recording video on their BlackBerry devices, of course. It was a really good set -- gorgeous weather and the venue was filling up quickly as a lot of people were wanting to get in for the other bands including Dinosaur Jr. I left after PATP as there were other showcases I wanted to see.
In the video for Blood Gets Thin, you can see the back of my short sandy blonde hair a few times in the lower left side of the screen  lol That party was for an Austin based music magazine, Soundcheck Magazine. A tent was set up in a small car park across the street from one of the main music venues, Emo's. It was nice to get out of the sun for a little while, enjoy some free tacos and cheap beer, and some good tunes.
