Thanks, Joz. I have some really great, supportive friends in the local music scene who help make events like this possible ![]()
Having a birthday gig makes turning 40 a little less painful ![]()

The Soft Pack at the weekend. Really liking them at the moment.

Looking forward to seeing Brendan Benson on Feb 24th. I'm a big fan of his solo material. And it's been almost 5 years since I've seen him on a solo tour.
And then there's this little thing called SXSW. The music portion of the festival this year is March 17th-21st.

Blood Red Shoes later. Decent lil outfit.

This is a combination upcoming gig and band recommendation for the London folks.
http://www.mercyonline.co.uk/who-we-are … 06-baptism
Saturday 10th April, 2009 // 7 – 11pm
Shoreditch Church, London Adv. tickets £10
Mercy's creative partners for these shows, pop-experimentalists Wave Machines, will also be presenting brand new collaborative work with poet and Mercy Creative Director Nathan Jones (“strident, dramatic and compelling?? The Londonist), alongside work from London's hottest literary-salon, Book Club Boutique, host Salena Godden, and South Bank-resident and Warp contemporary-classical piano innovator Sarah Nicolls.
ACTS
Live acts are supported by a team of Mercy's artists in residence –Scott Spencer, Adam Sloan and Becky Grove – providing new multimedia, illustration and set-design work.
Music !!!
Wave Machines
Co-hosts Wave Machines make instinctive art-pop with an energy, complexity and intimacy that gives their live performances the feel of epic experience. With their English melancholia pricked by impudent promise, they are part of that eccentric lineage of home grown musical adventurers XTC, The Beta Band and Hot Chip. The Wave Machines/Mercy relationship has grown and developed as their collective stars have risen, and WIYRT#06 promises to be a new climax in what has been a groundbreaking series of shows.
Eugene McGuinness and the Lizards
Unstoppable vocal impresario uniting the styles of Wainwright, Morrissey, Dylan and the proverbial fat lady, is joined by his new band to burn up the stage for a set featuring new material, and tunes from his forthcoming second album Glue, along with a new collaboration with Ross Sutherland. Eugene is one of the most distinctive performers on the scene, and this setting will be perfect for this unique brand of neo-pop.
Gary Daly
Lead singer of 1980's pop-ballad superstars China Crisis, performs new solo material from his limited release e.p. on Polite, and presents a series of new artworks as part of the setting for this magical event
Sarah Nicolls
Sarah Nicolls is a pianist specialising in contemporary music. She has performed concerti with the London Sinfonietta, the Philharmonia Orchestra and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, appearing in solo recital over a dozen times on Radio 3, and receiving consistent critical acclaim since her South Bank debut in 2001. Sarah will be presenting her work exploring the expansion of the grand piano with electronics and pre-recorded sound alongside new poetic work from Mercy.
Poetics !!!
Ross Sutherland & Eugene McGuinness
One of The Times’s Top Ten Literary Stars of 2008 and Time Out Award-winner. Ross's new solo show The Three Stigmata of Pacman, has received rave reviews across the board. For this collaboration with Eugene McGuinness, Ross will be directing a musical of his own life, where he is played by a female lead. Absurd, touching and hilarious.
Salena Godden
Hostess of top literary salon Book Club Boutique, Salena is one of the best writer-performers in the game. Her poetry sets veer from the heart-warming to the downright filthy. For this show, Salena will be exploring sin, purity and heavenly delights.
David J
“The Vocal Pugilist?? remains one of the most powerful and original performers in spoken word. A heritage of r&b, rap, poetry and theatre, matched with a dedication to technical excellence, provide David J with a integrity of purpose and dexterity of delivery that will bring the even the big man's house down.
Nathan Jones & Wave Machines
This hugely inventive and ambitious resident partnership for the WIYRT events provides the dramatic setting for the shows. Nathan's distinctive delivery style is set off perfectly by Wave Machines' epic and responsive interpretations.
Performance !!!
Karen McLeod
Trained physically in styles such as Decroux, Grotowski, and Le coq, Karen creates physical performances through female personae who display transgressive behaviour, challenging the audiences’ boundaries, forcing them to question and celebrate the art of live performance. For WIYRT#06, she will be taking Salome's dance of the seven veils, and the beheading of John the Baptist as her starting point.

Very much on a "tail between legs" basis i have to 'fess up that I didn't make it in the end. All very annoying in hindsight especially as there's nout for me this week that I really want to see.

Foals just announced for New Slang here in kingston on Thursday and Futureheads next week at the same place. Gonna miss both. Life can be so unfair :'( .

You should come up to Austin ![]()

I won tix to see The Big Pink (for tonight - Thurs) at The Parish in Austin. They're playing with A Place To Bury Strangers. This is gonna be one hell of a LOUD gig ![]()

In Houston at the moment and off to see this band on Saturday. Main reason for going was i'd heard that one of the guitarists had a huge orange head. This I had to see for myself so I'm on my way to a place called Mango's.

I thought I was onto a good thing last night as the lead singer of The Strokes was playing in town. Very disappointingly I checked out his solo stuff on Youtube and it's total pants though ![]()
Might go see this lot tomorrow. Not totally my thing but there's nothing else i want to see. a bit avant garde but I wanna see the venue (where this clip is at too). Only trouble is they have a strange arrival code in that you are only allowed in, if you bring your motorbike with you. Something, again, I have to see for myself...

have never been able to get into The Strokes - have three albums and none of them have stayed in my stereo for very long so I am really not shocked to hear you say him solo is pants.

a free XFM night 4th May with Dan Le Sac and Scroobius Pip

APTBS just wasn't my thing. I like a little fuzz and feedback but their sound was so overwhelming that any nuances and melodies were non-existent.
The Big Pink were well received and put on a decent show. Took a bunch of pics too : http://www.flickr.com/photos/poptartjen … 842174672/

surprise attack of a double Bowling For Soup acoustic set
firstly Saturdays offering as my friend loves them, then tomorrow as they have just announced a last minute show due to the fact they cannot get home, so hurrah for ash clouds.
I did enjoy Saturdays, although they aren't really a band I would say I have listened to other than the odd song on the radio but was a good little gig. However seeing the acoustic touring duo at Barfly tomorrow I think is going to top it and I have already promised my friend I will be her gig buddy for their proper October tour.
