Went to both P+TP gigs last Thurs and Fri. Surfer Blood, who are getting alot of column inches here at the moment supported in Kingston so that added interest. They were ok but not a patch on the main event ofcourse. A couple of new songs too that i'd not heard. Both were good. They really are boringly consistent in this department. I might have said this before but with just about everyone else I like, i'm a bit apprehensive about whether I'll dig the new material. With P&TP it's the complete opposite. I always want new songs. Is this good or bad? Don't know. The Lexington was, as a London pub gig, always going to be even better and it was. Great atmosphere and sold out. Didn't hear Motorbike at either which was a shame. Or Washing Powder. It they played just 10 mins longer i'd be properly saciated ![]()

ok sorry Neat Beats managed to miss this post
want of new songs means a want for progression in a band?
a want for them to do well?
I love the old stuff but the new songs get me just a little more excited than say Mr Understanding, I am eager to own motorbike for example as its a tune
Offline
saw Dead By Sunrise last night
I love Linkin Park so was a bit of a must do
(yes I realise liking Linkin Park has never been a cool thing to do but regardless they have saved my head a few times and even my love of Chiefs after Elland Road)
Loved the show and loving the album since hearing it live.
The Delta Fiasco were support and although they didnt capture me last night I cannot stop listening to their tunes on Myspace and would love to see them again somewhere like Heaven with someone like Foals as headline

Well I guess both. What's progression? If you are already knocking out ace tune-age you can't really progress can you? I am happy for them not to progress at all if it means we continue to get what we are currently getting. ![]()
Offline
but you can always improve
they can do ace tunes but I personally wouldnt want a load more Mr Understandings when I could have some Blood Gets Thins as well
that was a progression in my eyes, with pirates you can always tell when its their song but I wouldnt want them all to sound the same either
which thankfully is not something they are doing and the new songs although sound like pirates sound different enough from each other to make them interesting
its like listening back to Sonny and Knife they wouldnt have fit on Little Death
all ace tunes but there has been a progression
speaking about knowing a pirates song when you hear it I do find it interesting how the majority of Tap Tap songs you know are Tap Tap and not Pirates even though its Tom singing and in some respects do sound similar
especially if you take into account Pete and Jonny's musical side projects which dont sound anything like pirates

well after a week of gigs and surviving when so out of practice at doing such a session I thought I would rate them
first up Automatic with Straight Lines at Oxford
why is Oxford always so cold? I have never been near the academy and felt warm ever! First of two strange gigs, both bands were brilliant, Auto are just so much better live than they have ever been on record, but crowd although knew the majority of the songs were pretty still, giving good response with cheers and clapping but no one particularly up for dancing so me and my friend joined a bouncy guy in the middle and jumped around like loonies. Didnt do my back any good so ended up with a numb arm for the rest of the night. Straight Lines had a few fans there making it a nice change to have others knowing the songs. Loads of the crowd after wanted autographs and to chat to the band and the band themselves were buzzing.
Colchester however was the opposite, crowd were really bouncy but no one seemed to know any of the songs, we stayed out of the pit this time as they lads just seemed to want to hurt each other, we had also on the drive up been given the news my friends house had been burgled so we were feeling a bit subdued. Paul comes on to join Straight Lines for a cover which is really good and I wish he would sing like that when singing auto songs as its much better. The song is At The Drive In's One Armed Scissor. Both bands came off less buzzing than the night before despite saying they had enjoyed it and us thinking they would have enjoyed it more as the crowd were seemingly more up for it.
Get Well Soon at Borderline, well I cheated, spent the whole night at the back on comfy chairs they have added since my last visit, back in love with the venue now, pirates please go back there, and actually was one of those people I hate at gigs as I spent the night catching up with another friend. Was a lovely night and the music was spot on. Would possibly see them again but would need to get into their songs a bit more before.
Stereophonics at Wembley, ended up on the barrier right at the side by Adam. I love Adam so this was most pleasing for me, actually what am I saying I love them all and openly fangirl over them as well as appreciate the music. However did feel like an end of an era in some sense as before I used to know all the lyrics to all the songs and loved all the songs. Not bad for a band that has been going for over ten years, the last album unfortunately I have failed to enjoy as much as the previous offerings, so I hardly knew any of the lyrics for any of the songs. They also played a song from the new album which is the only Phonics song I have ever hated, Beerbottle, what a shit song, so we took a rest and had a quick nap for that one
. Straight after they played my all time favourite Phonics song with Same Size Feet which had me jumping like a good one. Feel its a bit of a shame but I am still looking forward to the next album, hoping its a return to their more rockier stuff as I am not so fond of them in pop phase. Really do not feel the need to do another arena gig again, even for one of my longest loves musically I found myself unable to feel engaged with the music like I can in the smaller venues. Only one exception with Linkin Park as there isnt another option.
Support Hip Parade were good and I think I am being dragged to see them again when they head back to London Town.
Then on to Pirates, feeling a little tired by this stage, wasnt overly happy to see Eelectricity and Lust had been added to the bill but they kept it amusing by breaking strings left right and centre, not convinced by them though. The second band, Hjaltalín, were from Iceland, not that the crowd cared as they chatted throughout. Shame as the music was more engaging than the previous band and the female singer had an amazing voice.
Pirates next, dont think I really need to say much as I have said it in the Windmill thread but enjoyed it slightly more than Phonics but not as much as Oxford. Loved Motorbike being back in the set, think I might be finding a favourite pirates song with that little beauty.

just back from Laura Marling at Barfly
holy hell she has improved so much and has power to her voice now
the audience were just gorgeous and were so respectful and quiet for all the artists and really warm receptions to everyone
audience sent straight from gig heaven
however Barfly let us down with either being unable to turn on the air con or not wanting to
the venue ended up so hot at least five people fainted and lets be honest you dont jump around at a Laura Marling gig so was purely on the extreme and muggy temperature in there
only slightly detracted from the actual performance and although we all staggered out like disorientated drunks she definitely gave the gig a magic touch
proved in how many people stayed through volcanic heat just to hear her new songs
wow
if I could be anyone in the world I think it would have to be her

walked out of the Paloma Faith gig I went to so I wouldnt say that was a good one
Auto at The Garage though was like a party I didnt want to end, so much fun.
Paul has promised something in May which I believe is the Young Legionnaire stuff he is doing with other sort of famous musicians.
Goldheart Assembly were brilliant at ICA, which seemed a lot bigger than I remember it

went to The Neats single launch
wasnt won over by The Neat to begin with and will say I was going to the gigs to support Nick and Simon Kaiser more but really enjoyed their set on Tuesday
First band Whales In Cubicles were ok
the second band were shocking - Triumphant Video, as soon as the guitarist walked past with a blue face and then they put on stupid huge jelly fish inspired hats they lost me, when they started playing they confirmed what I expected when they put on the gimmick hats - if you need a gimmick your music is shit
The last band Bitches we walked out of as we were laughing too hard

Young Knives in Aldershot on Friday were great as usual. What a hole 'shot is mind
. They played some new tunes of which most were good and the crowd, despite, disappointingly not moshing, were very warm in their applause and general acclaim. What an underrated outfit they are. I absolutely love 'em.

was tempted to go to that one one for young knives and two thats where I grew up

Brian Jonestown Massacre last night in Shepherd's Bush was the best of a great four gigs i've had this past two weeks. I'd not have thought that would be the case but the atmosphere was fabulous. Wonderfully vibey indeed. They played almost all the "biggies" you'd expect, except, I think "Swallowtail". Was amazed at how young so much of the crowd was compared with other times i'd caught them. BJM have a great groove pulsing through their indie-esque retro tunage, I love it. Wanted to see the support, The See See (recommended by Poptartjen actually) but had travel problems. Turned up for them last year only to be told that it was cancelled as the drummer had woken up in Newcastle (I don't think this was normal) with one of his hands missing. (definately not normal) :-O

never really heard of them until recently
any songs you think I should check out?

Sorry for my allround tardiness. Been in Europe this week. Well, maybe check out Infinite Wisdom Tooth, Going to hell, A New Low in Getting High, Fu*k you for Fuc*ing me (oh the charm). The album Tepid Peppermint Wonderland contains Swallowtail, Anenome, Servo, Nevertheless and Hide & Seek, all of which they always play live (when I see them). The album has 38 tracks and is like a "getting up to date with the band" album, released 6 years ago. Half the tracks are iffy but @19 great ones for a tenner or something is pretty good in my book. The whole BJM thing for me is accessing the gems (which fortunately they do live) and discarding the tosh. They are not consistent but brilliant at their best IMHO.

ok for gigs to rate
this week started with Straight Lines, Crazy Arm and The Xcerts at Borderline in London on Tuesday
Crazy Arm I had never heard of by they have won me over with a rocking set so immediately bought the album
Straight Lines were good but took a little time to warm up properly, love the new one which is currently without a name.
The Xcerts bored me - not sure why as they had everything going for them and a sound which I usually agree with but they lacked that certain something.
Next up was Johnny Flynn with the Sussex Wit with Dry River at Electric Ballroom on the Wednesday.
Dry River were brilliant will be checking them out further, like Johnny Flynn with the Country Folk kinda sound but more rock.
Johnny was fantastic, I adored the set he played and found the newer stuff just a tad darker than the previous album, which was welcome. Apparently there were famous people stood near us but I didnt know them.
Cannot wait for the new album to arrive. Who knows I might even start to like the ballroom with the influx of gigs happening there.
Up to Birmingham Academy 2 next for Frank Turner and Straight Lines on Thursday
Straight Lines pulled out a faster heavier sounding set than borderline even though there was only one change of song on the list. Loved it and nice to see others singing along.
Frank Turner was doing an acoustic show but he proved he doesn't really need a band. He can carry the songs alone just as well as he can with a full band. The sing-a-longs were excellent, in tune loud and the crowd seemed to know every word. I am not quite there yet as I have only just gotten back into him. Tom singer from Straight Lines joined him on stage for one song and although their voices dont compliment each other the obvious fanboy love from Tom made it a moment to remember. Frank came out into the crowd afterwards and showed off his new tattoo, I asked him about it and he poked it followed by an OW as he had literally got it done that day. We laughed at his misfortune ![]()
Back down to London for Goldheart Assembly at Kings College on Friday.
Forgot my ticket so had to run back home after getting half way there and then having to beg brother to drop me off. Upon leaving the van I immediately get lost - twice! Eventually get there and catch up with my friend who has waited for me for over an hour - ouch! Find a place to stand sort out drink and Goldheart are on. Perfect timing as from others comments the supports were shocking. Goldheart pulled out yet another fun set and despite the frantic efforts in getting there it was worth coming back down south for.
Sunset Festival with The Automatic, GLC and Twenty Twenty on Saturday.
So next morning up bright and early to catch a train to Chester to meet up with my best mate Sam for a trip to the Wirral. Awful train journey reminding me yet again why I prefer the coach but needed to get there quick.
Loads of local bands to begin with who were shit if I am honest, despite all coming from down the road they appeared to have attracted no fans to cheer them on. Bad sign and they were bad. Well actually for pub bands they were alright. The rain eased so we sat watching the trampolines waiting for something better to hit the stage. Finally watched Twenty Twenty who are supporting Mcfly - enough said really. They were entertaining enough and have the fashionable hair cuts and clothes so I can see them doing well. Bassist played one string for the whole set which caused us much merriment. Girl started crying when she missed the plec thrown into the crowd - bless!
Next up Goldie Lookin Chain - had forgotten how much fun these guys are live. Having a tent singing your mother has a penis is something you cant really explain
They soon had me jumping around.
Then we got a call from a friend who was working the festival with Tinchy so we hung out with him until The Automatic were due on. Walked back to catch the end of Ebony Bones - erm good beats and good dancers but I wouldnt check them out again.
Next up The Automatic, I do love them but the sound was shocking and I cant pretend it was the best they have ever performed but it was good enough. Rob shouted out a happy birthday for me so I came away chuffed. So finally after a say of highs and lows we headed back to Wrexham.
Day out in Leeds for the Sunday before heading back to London for The Charlatans Some Friendly set at The Roundhouse.
They are so good live, I do struggle to listen to them a little recorded but live the songs come to life for me. I cant say these songs hold special meaning to me but it was a top gig. Ended up in the first aid bit at the end after my friend sliced her finger on a soap dispenser
cannot take us anywhere
Tomorrow I head to Brighton for Stereophonics and Kids in Glass Houses
really looking forward to it and surprisingly not as tired as I thought I would be.
Bring it!

Good show last night, great atmosphere. Cant believe they played "New Slang" and I'm well grateful although they played alot from the current album (obviously expected) which I rate as only ok. 15 min walk home too. Job done
Roll on the Garage in a few weeks for more.

yeah have to say once I got into it had a damn good night, prefer it at the hippodrome even considering it is full of rather interesting memories of youth, felt like some warped dream where your older self gets slammed face to face with your young foolish self
I will say I agree too heavy on the last album which is average
was desperate for a bit of wrong way to be but alas
would have made the night top but without it I was left wanting more
was fun to be back at a proper gig again though with beer flying everywhere, coming out hot and sweaty and buzzing

If i'm honest i'm a tad picky with my music so it's quite rare that I am sufficiently moved to seek out supporting acts for futher visits etc. On this basis The Cribs last week at The Garage was an even better treat than I could have expected. An outfit called Lovvers supported. Hardly original, retro punk that sort of clings to that West coast new wave genre (of which i'm a fan so slight bias ). Nevertheless, a la the magnificent P&TP, really good tunes. (though nobody is quite that consistent obviously) Will see them again.

second time I have seen Lovvers and although they were ten times better this time around they havent grabbed me
maybe because the first time was seriously awful
honestly thought they had pulled a joke on us and we werent getting a support band but a girl having a hissy fit
until I realised it wasnt a girl and it was a band
oops
last gig I went to was Murmur Box at Windmill with Goldheart Assembly Oldwick Thee Single Spy Klak Tik and Joseph Works
JW wasnt as good as last time I saw her
TSS were a lot better than last time
Klak Tik have been hyped by NME and were predictably shit
Oldwick were fun and Goldheart just about made it for a very hot set
good night out and all for a fiver
