Religion

bit of a big one but seeing as its naturally started in the Narnia thread what are peoples views on it
do you believe its still relevent in these computerisd times
do you follow any religion or have any belief system
or are you off the mind if you cant touch it, its not real

I dont mind religion as long as it leaves me alone
I am not interested in following a set of rules to lead me to a god
plus I am leant more towards pagan so kinda a little difficult to follow something like christianity which only believes in one god dismissing all other myths legends religions and beliefs
I do however see a place for religion as I think it can help establish communities and help structures for people both within the local and international populations, a lot of charity work comes from religion which may not have come about without a group of people coming together with the mind of helping those less fortunate. On a more personal level they can provide a helpful reminder on how to treat each other and can help us take a step back and mediate on our own lives. Space which helps us see where we need to make changes and gives us the kick to do so.
For me personally who hates being told what to do and when I cant get on with it and prefer to set up my own way of finding time outs and beliefs, I love looking at the history of religions though as they are pretty intriguing and interesting.

Yes there is extremes and extremists but the majority of people following religion arent apart of that.

Re: Religion

I love ancient myths, its amazing to look back at what was taken for the norm and how they understood the world around them. Ancient Egyptians for example took the beginning to have started in water with lots of strange creatures, where the seas drew back and land rose forth and the creatures crawled out of the seas and became land dwellers which is actually what the majority of modern day science takes as the natural evolution of life on earth. Obviously the inbetween bits of history was taken over by religious belief which stated god made all out of clay. I had a bit of a run in with fundamental christian over the beginning and stating that adam and eve were stories designed to help people understand the world around them as I didnt realise they take the bible literally.

I am not sure if I would take greek mythology as a religion or not
I mean its based on beliefs but there isnt a set structure to follow to worship the gods as they have been pretty much been forgotten in time.

Re: Religion

For me I believe in the Catholic beliefs, because to put it simply they just want us to be nice to each other. I think I believe in God and Jesus but I've had doubts because if you die and go to heaven you have to wait for all your mates to die before you can talk to them, so you'd be lonely and you can't be lonely if there's no suffering in heaven. So I think that we're not exactly right about everything so we shouldn't pretend our way is the right way and the only right way. When we die I think we're dead and we no longer feel anything, until judgement day where everyone is judged to either go into heaven or hell, I don't think there could be a purgatory.

Re: Religion

surely as lonely is a human emotion once you reach enlightenment which is heaven/paradise you wouldnt feel it anymore
the only thing you would feel is peace

Re: Religion

exactly which is my point, it means nobody can go directly to heaven because they'd feel lonely without friends who aren't dead, so I think it could be an arguament against religion really, I wouldn't want to lose things luke that either because when you're lonely you can talk to people about it and open up which is always good so I see a place in being lonely

Re: Religion

I know what your point was but I think you missed mine
if you reach enlightenment lowly earthly feelings like loneliness would be forgotten
you would feel if you felt at all, at peace, understanding the greater tapestry of life, death, afterlife and god
Lonely is an emotion from the desire to be with someone which probably would have been set up to help us herd and breed
we wouldnt have the same needs in heaven as we would be free from our human bodies and restraints
if we were at enlightenment we would all be as one without boundaries race religion or anything else that would otherwise keep us from loving our neighbour
you would love without want

Re: Religion

its quite a nice idea
but something which being human is quite hard to get to grips as we are so bound by our restrictions and wants

pretty much like unconditional love
